Dads v Lads (and Lassies) event is a great day

The Dads v Lads (and Lassies) event on Sunday 23rd August 2009 was another great success.  Thanks go to Andy Jenkinson for all his organisation, to Joanne for slaving away in the kitchen and to Bob and Harj Sambhi for making the curry.

Under 12s v Under 11/13s

On the cricketing front, in the Under 12s versus U11/U13 match, the Under 12's batted first and posted 75. The main contributions come from Oliver Goor  with 12 not out and a returning Jacob McCormack (returning from Chshire just to play in this match) with 19.  The wicket-rtakers for the Under 11/13s were Liam Fox, George Callaghan, Tom Doughty, Sam Bullers and 16-year-old  Matty Fox!  In reply the 11/13s reached their target with 8 wickets down in the last over, with the mainstays being Jamie Elliott 26 not out and Joe Bickerdyke 12.  Wickets shared between Jacob McCormack, Roshan Patel and Phoebe Austin.

12's v 12's Dads Army
The Under 12s bat first and start with 25 runs on the board. Everyone chips in with a few runs and the top scorers were Roshan Patel 19 not out and Ben Jenkinson16 not out. The innings closed on 100 for 9. Wicket takers for Dads Army were Chris Lord with 3, Bob Sambhi with 2, Andy Hepworth, Glen Rossington and 2 run outs!  The Dads reply begins with loss of 2 early wickets but the middle order of Andy Goor 30 not out, Graham Austin 22 not out, Andy Jenkinson 14 not out and Bob Sambhi 13 not out see the Dad's home to win by 7 wickets with a over to spare.

11/13s v 11/13s Dads Army

The Under 11/13's bat first with 25 runs on the board. The Dads took wickets at regular intervals but a quick fire 33 not out from George Robson and steady support from Jamie Elliott 16 not out see the side finish on 101 for 8.  Wicket takers are Andy Jenkinson with 2, Steve Simcoates, Nigel Payne, Frank Bullers, Mukesh Patel and 2 run outs.  The Dads reply begins with both openers back in the bar after 10 balls!  Paul Elliott and Andy Jenkinson steady the ship before Paul falls for 14. Wickets continue to fall in quick succession and at 51-6, Frank Bullers joined Andy Jenkinson at the wicket. The pair took the score onto 89 which includes 2 huge sixes from Frank, one of which went over the club and into the Rugby club!  Frank was out next ball for 19. Mukesh Patel then gets run out going for the winning run so it’s now 101 for 8, next ball it’s 101 for 9. Steve Simcoates joins Andy at the wicket and with the 3rd ball of the 17th over George Callaghan bowls Andy for 29 to send the juniors into wild celebrations; they had snatched a tie from the jaws of defeat!  Wicket takers for the Under11/13s were Ben Jenkinson with 2, Roshan Patel, Ben Payne, Sam Bullers, George Robson, Callum Walker, Connor Wilson and a run out.

Under 12s wrap up the Junior League season with a win

The final League game of the season involved the under 12s playing Amaranath at Scatcherd Lane on Thursday 6th August.  The season was finished in style as the home side recorded a win by 59 runs.  Morley batted first and posted 97-5 with Ben Jenkinson 31 not out and Ben Payne 22 not out.  In response, Morley bowled Amaranth out for 38 runs with a good display in the field and wickets being shared around the team.  Phoebe Austin topped the list with 3 wickets, Aran Sambhi and George Walker each taking two and there was a wicket each for Patrick Lord, Oliver Goor and Ben Jenkinson.

Damp ending for an excellent season

The Under 17s season came to a soggy end when heavy rain on Wednesday 29th July ruled out any chance of play in their final game at home to Hanging Heaton. So despite going through the entire league programme unbeaten, Morley finished second, paying the price for a couple of occasions when they were rained off whilst other teams played.  If, as seems likely, the whole under 17 programme was rained off last night, we will also miss out on a place in the Play Offs, due to the run rate calculations.

None of this should detract though, from what has been a very successful season. The core of older players has performed with great consistency all year, whilst the younger ones have all contributed with match winning performances at various points. There have been some memorable performances along the way bringing a string of excellent victories. It’s been a fine team effort which has brought a lot of pride to the club, and special thanks must again go to manager Rob Daly for his work and enthusiasm in bringing it all together.

Congratulations to Hanging Heaton on winning the section and we wish them good luck in the play-offs.

Reports from under 11s, under 12s and under 17s from week commencing 20th July

In the under 11s home game against Colton, the visitors batted first to post 168-4 (net 148).  Wicket takers were 8-year-old Bradley Simcoates with 3 and his brother Lewis with 1.  The bowlers were well-supported in the field in particular by Liam Fox who took fine catches.  In response Morley posted 128-7 (net 93) to lose the game by 55 runs.  It was a great effort by a side that included several under-age players including 3 – Bradley Simcoates, William Cutt and Matthew Barraclough – who were making their hard-ball debuts.

The Under 12s played at Whitkirk and batted first to post 99-4.  The innings was built around two good partnerships involving Callum Walker and Roshan Patel and then Ben Jenkinson and Oliver Goor.  Whitkirk knocked-off the required runs in 18 overs for the loss of two wickets taken by Jenkinson and Patel.

The under 17s kept up their winning run to secure an impressive 44 run win at Gomersal on Wednesday 22nd July.  Batting first, they again made a steady start before cutting loose in the second half of the innings. Captain Verundev Sambhi made a welcome return to form, scoring 31, and he received good support from Matthew Dowse (26), Ryan Dowse (23) and Spenser Horsfall (18) as the visitors closed on 122-4 - a very good effort in poor conditions on a bowler friendly pitch.

Morley then wrapped up the game in the first 7 overs, reducing the home side to 9-5, with Matthew Dowse completing a good night’s work with figures of 4-10. Gomersal recovered to finish on 78-9, with youngster Senior batting at number 11 and showing great promise with a couple of well struck boundaries. Chris Rodwell (2), Horsfall (1) and Sambhi (1) were the other wicket takers along with a run out courtesy of a direct hit from Horsfall.

The final game of the season takes place next Wednesday (29th) at home to League leaders Hanging Heaton.

Under 17s maintain momentum

In spite of fielding a depleted side and suffering a couple of injuries during the game, the under 17s continued their winning run in the league against East Ardsley.  Batting first, Morley posted 126 for 2 with Spenser Horsfall opening and, once again, making a good contribution with 45.  Chris Rodwell also batted well, retiring on 51 not out with just one ball to go.  In the visitors’ response, wickets fell at regular intervals for them to complete their 20 overs on 100-8 to give Morley a win by 26 runs.  Horsfall topped the bowling figures with 3-5, while there were two wickets for Jerome Austin and one each for Matthew Dowse, Chris Rodwell and Alex Houghton.

Under 12s run Colton close

The under 12s lost out to Altofts who batted first to post 129-3.  Wicket takers were Ben Jenkinson and Ben Payne plus a run-out.  In response Morley lose early wickets and Ben Jenkinson (15) was the only player to get into double figures as they struggled to 49-9

Wins for both under 15s and 17s

On Monday 6th July, the Under 15s had a comfortable home win over Mirfiield Parish Cavaliers.  The visitors were dismissed for 65 with the wickets shared out amongst the team. Morley knocked off the total in just 9 overs, with James McNichol retiring on 38 and Tom Swaby scoring 18. Under 13 Wicket Keeper Jamie Elliot put in a tidy performance behind the stumps.

On Wednesday, 8th July, the Under 17s kept up their unbeaten run with a 30 run victory at home to Hunslet Nelson. Morley posted 135-7, with openers Spenser Horsfall (37) and James McNichol (27) giving the team a great start. Jack Seddon then entertained the supporters with a whirlwind 44, including 21 from one over.

In reply, the visitors soon fell behind the required run rate after an excellent opening spell from James McNichol, who conceded just 9 runs from his four overs. Nelson captain Busfield showed great resistance, retiring on 52, but there wasn't enough support as his team finished on 105-5. Morley's 14 year old off spinner Jerome Austin continued his fine form for the 17s by taking 3-20 and Spenser Horsfall rounded off an impressive night’s work with 2-18.

Under 17s win in style at Gildersome

The under 17s won at Gildersome by 65 runs on Wednesday 2nd July.  Batting first, there were valuable contributions down the order with Spenser Horsfall 29, Jack Seddon 31 (of which 20 came from one over), Matthew Dowse 33, Matti Bramley 20 and Ryan Dowse 22 not out as Morley posted 149-6.  Gildersome’s response was restricted by a tight spell from Morley’s opening bowlers which forced Gildersome to chase an almost impossible rate and they were bowled out for 84 in 18 overs.  Jerome Austin took 4-15 (with all four wickets coming in his last over); Tom Swaby took 3-20, James McNichol 2-13 and there was a wicket each for Chris Rodwell and Matthew Dowse.  Three of the wickets to fall came as the result of excellent catches on the boundary by George Bartlett.

Under 12s away at Colton - the home side bat first and post an impressive 138 all out with Phoebe Austin heading the bowling figures with 4-16 and there were wickets for Ben Jenkinson (2-20) and Aran Sambhi (1-23).  In response, Morley struggled to just 33 all out to leave Colton with an impressive win.

Under 17s face one high, one low

After the defeat in the Cup, the under 17s got back to winning ways at home to Ossett on Wednesday night.  The batting order was freshened up a little for the game and Spenser Horsfall opened steadily to score 30 runs.  There were not many runs around him, however, and when he was joined at the crease by Matthew Dowse the side were on 23-3.  Both players built a useful innings with Dowse retiring on 54 not out and with other contributions the side had moved to 125-5 by the end of their 20 overs.  The Morley bowling response was tight and with Jerome Austin taking 2-9 and a wicket each for Chris Rodwell, Horsfall and Dowse, the visitors were only able to reach 86-6 in reply.

The under 17s crashed out of the Brackenbury Cup at Moorlands on Tuesday 24th June 2009.  Facing a side that were all at the top of the age group, Morley were outplayed in every department with the only bright spot being the performance of some of the younger players pulled into the side.  The home side batted first and went for it in the last five overs to post a score of 119-6 with Chris Rodwell taking 3-23, Alex Houghton 2-19 and there was a wicket for Spenser Horsfall.  Morley’s response stuttered from the start with both openers getting out cheaply, a short spell of resistance from Horsfall and Rodwell before George Bartlett with six and Tom Swaby with 17 not out finally showed some fighting spirit.  Morley eventually scored to provide Moorlands with an easy passage to the next round.

Under 9s achieve their first win on the season

On a blustery night, the under 9s finally managed to get their first match of the season played, away to Gomersal.  Batting first courtesy of 21 from captain William Cutt , 6 not out from Callum Hirst and 5 not out from Matthew Barraclough with plenty of extras they rattled up 220 - 2 (net 210) after their 15 overs. There was some encouraging and sensible batting from all players, some playing in their first ever match.  In reply, Gomersal struggled in the light of some good bowling from Joe Fox 1-6 from his 2 overs and Cameron Levitt 1-4 off 1 over. There were also tight spells from Michael Upham who conceded just 1 run, James and Alex Marshall, whilst Taylor Ditchfield conceded only 7 runs in his 2 overs. Matthew Barraclough and William Cutt took 2 good catches in a good fielding display, with Bradley Simcoates making some good stops as well. Gomersal finished on 173 -2 (net 163) to give Morley a 47 run victory.

Close defeat for under 11s while the under 13s romp home

In the Leeds League, the under 11 side lost out in a close match at Whitkirk.  Morley batted first and posted 85-4 (net 65) with Lewis Simcoates on 6 not out.  In the reply, Morley bowled really well to take 7 wickets shared amongst Liam Fox, Lucas Rossington, Patrick Lord and Lewis Simcoates who also produced a run-out.  Whitkirk’s response reached 110-7 (net 75) to give them a victory by 10 runs.

In the Heavy Woollen League, the under 13s got back to winning ways with a seven-wicket win against Moorlands.  Morley wicket takers were Joe Hill and George Robson with two each plus one for George Callaghan as Moorland were restricted to 102-5.  The Morley response was lead by Jamie Elliot (27 not out) and George Robson (26 not out) as they reached their target with 4 overs to spare.

Under 11s and 12s suffer defeats

On 12th June, the U12s lost out by 5 wickets at Horbury Bridge.  Morley batted first but were all out for 68 which included 5 run-outs.  Top scorers were Jamie Elliott with 19 and Joe Hill 15.  The home side reached their target for the loss of 5 wickets with two each for Joe Hill and Roshan Patel and 1 for Phoebe Austin.

Morley Under 15s progressed to the next round with a 37 run victory over Moorlands. Morley batted first and were all out for 80 with Tom Swaby top scoring with 31. Morley then produced a fine performance with the ball to dismiss Moorlands for 43. Leading wicket takers were Ben Payne (4-7), Jerome Austin, (3-11) and Danny Widdowson (3-5).

Under 13s suffer first defeat

On Sunday, 7th June the Under 13s suffered their first defeat of the season at Birstall.   They home side batted first and posted 100 with a wicket each for Ben Payne, George Robson, Joe Bickerdyke and Joe HIll.  Ben Jenkinson topped the bowling figures with a fine return of 4 wickets for just 5 runs.  The Morley response came very close with George Robson 27 not out and Joe Hill 25 not out, the total of 97 fell just short with the home side gaining a win by just 3 runs.

Under 12s secure 5 wicket win

Meanwhile in the Leeds League, the under 12s secured a win away at Amaranth.   The home side won the toss and elected to bat posting 57-7.  There were useful contributions with the ball from Ben Jenkinson (2-5), Phoebe Austin (2-14) and Roshan Patel (1-8) and in the field with run-outs by Patrick Lord and Lewis Simcoates.  Morley’s response seemed in a spot of both at 12-3 but a partnership of 32 between Jenkinson and Aran Sambhi turned the game Morley’s way.  Jenkinson hit two consecutive 4s to end on 27 not out and Morley won by 5 wickets with five overs to spare.

Toughest game yet for Under 17s

The Under 17s faced their toughest test so far this season with a home game game against Gomersal on Wednesday 3rd June.  But they scraped home by 4 wickets with just one ball to spare.  Gomersal batted first and got off to a quick start before ending their innings at a "gettable" 95-8.  James McNichol headed the bowling figures with 3-29 and there was also two wickets for Jerome Austin and one apiece for Spenser Horsfall and Chris Rodwell. In response there were contributions almost down the scorecard with Verundev Sambhi top-scoring with 22, debutant Harry Edwards 20, McNichol 16 and Ryan Dowse 14.  However, at the start of the last over, Morley looked to be falling short with 14 still needed. A single brought Spenser Horsfall on strike who scored two fours and a single leaving Matthew Dowse to hit a boundary to win the game with just one ball of the innings left.  Exciting stuff that leaves Morley very much in the mix at the top of the table.

The under 13s also keep on winning

The under 13s stayed on the winning trail by restricting Gomersal to 86-8 and then securing their target for the loss of just two wickets.  While batting, Ben Payne took 2-6 and Jacob Jowitt 2-19 while in the response Roshan Patel retired unbeaten on 26 and Callum Walker scored 23 not out

Under 17s keep rolling on

The Under 17s continued their great start to the season with another easy win at East Ardsley.  The home batted first and were restricted to 81-8 off their 20 overs.  Jerome Austin lead the charge with the ball taking 4-14 off his fours overs, while Spenser Horsfall took two wickets off the last over to end the game with 3-13; the other wicket went to Ryan Dowse.  The Morley response took very little time with Verundev Sambhi, once again, taking the bowlers on before retiring on 54 not out and the target was reached for the loss of just 3 wickets in only 12 overs

Under 17s through to Brackenbury Cup R2

The Under 17s marched into the Second Round of the Brackenbury Cup with an emphatic win over Adwalton.  The home side won the toss and chose to bat and posted 85-4 off their 20 overs. Matthew Dowse took 2-7 off his four overs and was well supported by Spenser Horsfall at the other end.  There were a couple of wickets for Declan Chisholm, one for for Jerome Austin with Alex Houghton completing the bowling line-up.  In response, in spite of the loss of an early wicket, Verundev Sambhi (53 not out) and Matthew Dowse (25 not out) saw Morley through to their target and a comfortable 9 wicket win

It's 4 from 4 for the under 13s

On Sunday, 17th May, the under 13 side entetained East Ardsley and produced a cracking victory.  Morley batted first and scored 124-3 with Roshan Patel 28 not out and George Robson 25 not out.   In response, East Ardsley were bowled out for just 22 with Roshan Patel taking 3 wickets for 1 run, Ben Payne 2  wickets for 1 run as the side racked-up their 4th win in 4 games.

Meanwhile, the under 12s game on Monday 18th at Crossgates was rained off – 2 points each-  their next game is on Thursday 28th May at home to Amaranth in the cup competition

The under 11 side went down to a 64 run defeat at Caribbean on 11th June.  Caribbean scored 139-5 with Patrick Lord taking 2 wickets and Connor Grant, Liam Fox and Lewis Simcoates one each.   In response Morley scored 75-5 with Lucas Rossington scoring 6 not out.

Under 13s keep their run going while under 12s put in a gutsy performance

There were two games on Sunday 10th May. The under 13s went to New Farnley and produced a great display to win their 3rd game on the trot. The home side’s innings closed on 66-8 with Jacob Jowett (2-11) and Joe Hill (2-12) in fine form. Morley then knocked off the required total for the loss of 5 wickets with George Robson leading the way with 29 not out.

The Under 12s were at home to Whitkirk. The visitors posted a total of 86-5, Morley's wicket takers being Patrick Lord, Ben Jenkinson, Roshan Patel, Aran Sambhi and a run out. In reply Morley were 83 all out in the final over in a nail biting finish. The main batting contributions came from Roshan Patel (19) and Ben Jenkinson (13) in what was a gutsy display by Morley against a team of under 13s.

Under 17s coast home against Gildersome

The Under 17 side continued in their winning wins with an 8-wicket win against neighbours Gildersome at Scatcherd Lane on Wednesday 13th May 2009.  The game was played in poor light but that didn't seen to effect the Morley fielders as nine of the Gildersome wickets fell to catches with Ryan Dowse taking three and James McNichol 2.  The visitors were bowled out for 60 with Jerome Austin, for the second time in a week , topping the bowling with a fantastic 5-6! The Morley response didn't take too long with a couple of wickets going down but Skipper Verundev Sambhi scoring 39 not out to see Morley home in just short of ten overs.

Under 15s record last ball win at Hanging Heaton

The u15s recorded an exciting last ball victory at Hanging Heaton on Monday 11th May 2009.  Batting first, Morley's innings stuttered against some good bowling to finish on 70-5 with George Robson top scoring with 18.

It didn't really look enough, and despite an early breakthrough by Declan Chisholm, the home side were making steady progress towards their target. There then came a match turning spell of bowling from Jerome Austin who, aided by Ben Payne, stemmed the flow of runs and picked up 3 wickets as well to put Morley back in the hunt. Further wickets fell to George Robson, Connor Meese and Joe Hill, and at the start of the last over, Hanging Heaton needed 8 to win.

Chisholm took the responsibility of bowling it and did well to restrict the home side to needing 6 from the last ball. The night reached a dramatic end as the bowler then ripped the stumps out of the ground to complete a close win against determined opponents.

Morley are also pleased to announce their first representative honour of the season with 12 year old Phoebe Austin being selected for the West Yorkshire Girls u15 side to play this Sunday at Pickering. Well done Phoebe from everyone at the club.

Leeds League round-up

The Under 12s were at home to Whitkirk. The visitors posted a total of 86-5, Morley's wicket takers being Patrick Lord, Ben Jenkinson, Roshan Patel, Aran Sambhi and a run out.  In reply Morley were 83 all out in the final over in a nail biting finish. The main batting contributions came from Roshan Patel (19) and Ben Jenkinson (13) in what was a gutsy display by Morley against a team of under 13s.

On the previous Friday, the under 11 side started well but lost out to the weather as the game was abandoned due to the heavy rain.  On Thursday, the Under 12s lost out at Hunslet Nelson.  Morley batted first and posted 80-3 with innings been based upon an opening stand of 60 between Roshan Patel and Callum Walker.  In response, the home side reached their target for the loss of just two wickets taken by Callum Walker and Ben Jenkinson.

And they keep the good form going .....

The under 17s kept their good start going with a 7 wicket win at Ossett.  The home side batting first and posted 86-8 off their 20 overs.  There were a couple of wickets apiece for both Spenser Horsfall and Declan Chisholm and one for Alex Houghton and a run-out.  James McNichol bowled one over before feeling a slight side-strain, but that over proved decisive as he delivered a double wicket maiden!

The Morley response was well-timed and disciplined.  Verundev Sambhi scored 11 in a brisk start and it was then left to Ryan Dowse and McNichol, 26 not out, to see through Morley through.  Dowse reached an unbeaten half-century with a six to win the match with three overs to spare.

Under 17s start with a win

Morley under 17s started their season off on Wednesday with a 9 wicket win at home to Adwalton.  Having lost 6 experienced players from last year’s team, it was a new look side that took the field, with plenty of young players given a chance.

The visitors batted first were restricted by some tight bowling by Spenser Horsfall and Matthew Dowse, with Horsfall making an early breakthrough with a smart caught and bowled. There was then some firm resistance from Garner and Bowles before James McNichol grabbed two wickets in three balls to put Morley back on top.

Under 14s Jerome Austin and Declan Chisholm came into the attack and Austin took the fourth wicket with the help of a good running catch by Horsfall. Part time bowler Ryan Dowse then came on at the end and produced the excellent figures of 2-6 from 2 overs.  Under 12 Ben Payne made his debut for the 17s and fielded very bravely throughout the innings that closed on 71-6, Garner and Bowles both scoring 20.

The Morley reply didn't have the best start with skipper Verundev Sambhi dismissed in the first over for 4,  However next man in Jack Seddon steadied the ship and went on to hit an excellent 44 not out, mostly in boundaries.  Ryan Dowse supported him with a knock of 24 not out, and these two went on to secure the win, the innings closing on 75-1.

Juniors underway , well just about …….

It’s been very much a stop start beginning to the season for the junior section this year, and for once the weather isn't to blame!

After not planning to run an Under 11 team due to lack of numbers this year, there was a last minute influx of new players to the club.  It was too late to join the Heavy Woollen Junior League, but the side has been accepted by the Leeds Junior League.

They made their debut at home to Methley last Wednesday.  The match was lost, but most of the team were making their competitive debuts and will be looking to improve and develop as the season goes on.  Many thanks to everyone who helped out at such short notice to get the game on, in particular Andy and Joanne Jenkinson, Matthew Fox and Ryan and Matthew Dowse.

Sunday morning’s Under 13 game was cancelled when opponents Drighlington rang to concede on Friday night.

Monday night’s Under 15 game was abandoned when opponents Adwalton withdrew from the league last week.  Mirfield Parish Cavaliers have offered to enter a team to replace Adwalton, and a game against them is due to be arranged for later in the season.

Add Page Content. The under 12s side were beaten in the cup semi-final against a Colton side that inflicted a heavy defeat upon them in the league match. Expecting an easy win, Colton put Morley into bat and the side progressed to 62-4 with the top four all making good contributions.  During the interval there was a heavy rain shower and Colton clearly expected to knock the runs off within a few overs.  Roshan Patel took 3 wickets in his four overs during which he was backed up in the field with some good catching from Ben Payne and 9-year old Lucas Rossington.  A 28-3, Colton were beginning to wobble a little and with Ben Jenkinson taking three wickets and Phoebe Austin bowling a tight spell of four overs for just four runs, this had been the closest anyone had pushed Colton all year.  We eventually lost by 3 wickets but this was a tremendous effort by all eleven players – Ben Jenkinson, Roshan Patel, Ben Payne, Phoebe Austin, Jamie Elliot, Callum Walker, Joe Hill, Jack Hepworth, Oliver Goor, Lewis Simcoates and Lucas Rossington – well done to you all.
