Senior reports - weekend 24th / 25th April

1st team - home vs Keighley - Morley went down to a narrow defeat on Saturday against a strongly fancied Keighley team. Batting first, Danny Lloyd hit 71 with good support from the middle order. Colin Nuthall made 31, Jason Wilson 25 and Adam Larkin 35 not out. In reply, Morley got off to a great start when Nathan Bromby removed danger man Richard Robinson in the first over. However, two 50 runs partnerships followed and it looked comfortable for the visitors at 135-2. Morley battled on though and 3 wickets from Jimmy Russell brought them back in to the hunt. It wasnt quite enough and needing 6 going into the final over, the penultimate ball was hit for a maximum to give Keighley a 4 wicket victory.

2nd team - away vs Pudsey Congs - Morley were on top form away at Pudsey Congs. Rob Smith 42 and 15 year old James McNichol with 82 led the way in a big 237-8 total. In response, 2 early wickets for Spen Horsfall pegged back Congs. Liam Fynn with 3 wickets and then Ash Daly with 2 put the game beyond Congs. Despite a further wicket for Spenser, Morley couldn't quite manage maximum points as Congs finished on 161-9.  An excellent performance and a comfortable 76 run victory.

Senior squad update 03/04/10

With 2 weeks to go before the season starts the club has announced the signing of our new overseas star, Jason Wilson. Jason plays for Outtrim Moyarra Kongwak in the Victoria district competition. Jason has impressed for them during the last 2 seasons with 500+ runs both years, including 3 centuries. He is also a useful seam bowler. A plumber by trade, Jason is due to arrive on the 9th April.

Another new recruit is Naveed Siddique, who having relocated from Edinburgh will be pushing for a top order spot in the 2nd team, as well as providing wicket keeper cover. A warm welcome to 'Nav' from all at the club. Leaving the club is Phil Carter and Rob Lintin French. Phil after an impressive 2009 has joined Gomersal, while Rob has moved to Altofts. Thanks to both players for their Morley contribution and good luck with their new clubs.

Cricket section fundraiser is a great success

The cricket section’s fund raising day in aid of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre at St James Hospital proved to be a great success on Sunday, 17th August 2009. The target had been to raise £500 by putting on a day’s entertainment of 20/20 cricket. However, when everything had been counted, the cricket members and their families had contributed no less than £560 in cash and cheques. With other pledges still to come, the final total is set to clear £600, a great achievement for a very worthwhile cause and a tribute to the generosity of the Morley cricketing public, who supported the event so well.

There are many people to thank. Hilary Smith, Sally Larkin and Debbie Daly worked tirelessly all day, in the tea room, on the Tombola Stall and in taking the collection buckets round. There was some high class baking done by Janet Dowse, Bernadette Nebard and Louise Blackborough all providing a superb range of buns and cakes. Later in the day, the barbeque was manned by Michael Davies and Jamie Abbott, so there was no need for anyone to go hungry! Special thanks also to Richard Seddon for spending most of Saturday afternoon working out how to assemble the barbeque and get it lit.

Janet Dowse looked after the Tombola and Bric a brac stalls during the afternoon, aided by Paul Kinder’s lads, Alfie and Harry.  Simon Barraclough, as ever, produced an informative and interesting match day programme and thanks also to raffle ticket sellers Bernard Cooper, Jamie Abbott and Jerome Austin.

Out on the field we were grateful for the services of umpires Steve Sharp and Rob Daly and scorers Danny Glover and Joe Bickerdyke. Rob also put in a stint marking and rolling the pitches between games, helped by Ryan Dowse and Bob Mitchell.

David Dowse kept everyone entertained all day with the music, aided by Ryan.  Bernard Cooper, as ever, made sure all the money was safely put away for counting.  While for Graeme Smith it was like a normal match day – umpiring, scoring, marking the pitch, clearing-up, greeting people; you name it, Graeme probably did it.

The games themselves provided some excellent cricket for everyone who turned up to watch. In particular, our thanks go to the many guest players who gave up their Sunday to support us. There were familiar faces such as Vivek Mahajan, Stuart Liddell, Paul Kinder, Graham Austin, Spenser Horsfall and Sam Strickland making a welcome return to the ground and a number of new names who may have been unfamiliar to some at the start of the day, but soon made an impression.

None more so then New Farnley’s guest, Mirfield Parish captain David Winn, who produced the performance of the day with an incredible 110 not out against the Yorkshire Cancer Centre X1. The YCC’s Navid Hussain, from Northowram Fields, (49) and Liam Fynn (42) both kept the scorers busy in the same game.

Having both beaten New Farnley, The YCCs and Morley played off in the final game. Hussain (33), Mahajan (30) and Rob Smith (21 no) helped the Cancer Centre side to post 145 with Michael Cooper, who again reveled in this form of the game, grabbing 3-15.

Morley’s reply struggled, with only Northowram Fields’ Ben Burkill really getting going with 22. Groundsman Mally Larkin, who has fought his own successful battle with cancer in the past, came on to bowl and produced the superb figures of 2-22 from his 4 overs. Stuart Liddle was also firing on all cylinders, taking 4-16.

The final drama though, came in the very last over, with Morley needing 26 to win and last pair Michael Cooper and Spenser Horsfall at the crease. Cooper then hit 3 sixes and a four, and Horsfall grabbed 3 from the last ball to produce an amazing win and complete a memorable day.

Thanks to Rob Lintin-French, Gareth Kitchen, Ryan Dowse and Matthew Dowse for guesting for New Farnley and also Paul Eachus (Undercliffe) and Keighley’s Max Davison and Matt Bottomley, for Yorkshire Cancer Centre X1. Thanks also, to all the regular Morley and New Farnley players who turned out.

A very big thank you to Michael Brooke at Greenfield Bacon for generously donating the food on the day, to Mark Gulliver of D and R Sports in Bradford for providing the pink match balls, and to everyone at Robrooks Printers of Morley for their help, patience and kindness in providing posters and printing free of charge

A last word for Tom Smith who thought of the idea only 3 weeks ago and pulled together all the players, pre-match publicity and the helpers and attractions in a very short space of time. Nice one, Tom.

The cheque for the proceeds will be presented to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre by Tom Smith and Michael Cooper before the First X1's last home of the season against Keighley on September 5th.

New Farnley step into this Sunday's charity competition

East Ardsley have had to pull out of Sunday's Charity 20/20 competition in aid of the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.

However, we are delighted to announce that New Farnley have agreed to step in and replace them. This is a terrific gesture at such short notice and we are extremely grateful to them.

New Farnley expect to bring a strong side, including their overseas player, left hand batsman Connor Williams, plus former Yorkshire and Gloucestershire spinner Ian Fisher.

The other two captains, Michael Cooper (Morley) and Tom Smith (Yorkshire Cancer Centre X1) are finalizing their sides in readiness for what promises to be an excellent days cricket.

There are still plenty of opportunities for anyone wishing to help out on the day. Even if you can only spare an hour or so it will spread the load and be much appreciated. Either contact Graeme Smith or just turn up on the day.

Morley CC stages charity fundraiser

This Sunday (August 16th) the Cricket Section is staging a charity 20/20 competition. All proceeds will go to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre based at St. James’s Hospital Leeds.

The idea is the brainchild of First Teamer Tom Smith, whose mum Hilary is one of several people to fight the disease this year.  Mary Cooper, mother of First Team wicket keeper Michael is also undergoing treatment at the centre.  In the past the centre has also helped Club stalwart to fight the disease.  In addition, this year has seen Janet Dowse, mother of second teamers Ryan and Matthew, also have a cancer scare.

Tom told us “it’s certainly brought home the seriousness of this illness and the great job that the Yorkshire Cancer Centre do. We just wanted to try and give something back to them”.

We are delighted to announce that official sponsors have been secured for the charity event.  Many thanks go to:

·         Greenfield Bacon of Morley

·         Robrooks Printers of Morley

·         D and R Sports of Bradford

The action starts at 10 am and will feature a round-robin of 20/20 games involving Morley and a Yorkshire Cancer Centre X1. There will be a barbeque, hot and cold sandwiches, bric-a-brac and tombola stalls and the games will have musical accompaniment.

Guest players will include Morley’s legendary former overseas star Vivek Mahajan and long-serving all-rounder Paul Kinder will be making his final (?) one-off comeback.  Keighley’s Max Davison will be bringing their overseas player Jake Best and there are still other guests to be confirmed. Morley will have all the usual suspects on board.  Former Morley players Stuart Liddell and Sam Strickland are included in the Yorkshire Cancer Centre X1 line up, along with Graham Austin, one of the Bradford League’s all time record wicket takers. Also confirmed is Northowram Fields promising young opening batsman Nadim Hussain.

Please try and get along to help support what promises to be a good day’s cricket and at the same time raise some funds for a truly excellent cause.  The Third X1 have a vital away game at Altofts on Sunday, but are carrying out their own fund raising on the day in order to contribute. Thank you all very much!

Season over for Jimmy

The season is over for First team opening bowler James Russell.  James has suffered a bad tear in his calf and been advised to rest for 8 weeks.  Commiserations Jimmy and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

JCT 600 Bradford League announce the half-way averages
